Phil Johnson was a colt within the Lancashire tradition coached by wicket keeper Brian Wilson and bowler David Hughes. Over the last 18 month Phil has worked alongside cricket legend Jack Russell in his dual role as goalkeeping coach at Forest green Rovers and mentor at Gloucestershire Cricket Club.

Out of the many discussions about psychological approaches in the game a number issues were regularly encountered; Confidence; Leadership; Discipline; Attitude, Momentum, Pre-Competition preparation and Comfort Zones.

Whilst cricket is a team game it relies a great deal on individual performances during isolated periods of a game, batting, bowling and fielding. It was during this time we evolved greater thinking and psychological science in describing and using the concept of Comfort Zones, along with colleague Dr Stewart Cotterill, Sport Psychologist from the University of Gloucester. Having completed a strategy review for psychology within the ECB in 2007 one area of concern was in some quarters sport psychology was being taught but not carried through by being applied either by the psychologists or the players and disadvantaged them later on in their careers. Phil is available for both teaching and applied sport psychology.

The Professional Cricketer's Association PCA has been courageous in its public acceptance that some cricketers are faced with problems surrounding depression and addictions. Whilst professional football has gone some way to deal with such issues it is good to the PFA increasing its profile and Phil has expertis in these areas.
