Life Coaching
Life coaching, Executive Coaching and Positive Psychology are descriptions that reflect for me the essence of coaching psychology. Akin to some of the elements of sport psychology, coaching seeks to assist and facilitate a client to achieve change within their chosen context, whether this be personal development, career development or business performance.
Coaching is not counselling, but practitioners will need to acquire similar skills of listening, non-judgemental feedback, questioning, patience, coherence, clarity, trust and empathy. GROW (Goals, Realistic, Opportunity, When) & SMART (Goals which are Specific Measured Attainable Reviewable and Timed) models create a structure in which coach and client can focus attention, activity and direction.
One distinctive element of coaching, in contrast to counselling, is a focus on the 'here and now'. Whilst we are a product of our past, the ability to be 'present' and consider the future, enables a client to feel free of their history to facilitate their process of change. Interventions tend to be of relative short duration and therefore more time limited than counselling. Whilst the focus is always on the client and their process, the coach enables change through pacing development, supporting transitions, assisting reflection, dealing with resistance and motivation. Coaching can be completed by direct contact, email and telephone.
